It has been demonstrated that the NMR spectroscopy of molecules oriented in liquid crystalline media can be used to determine covalent and van der Waals radii. From the studies on several 5- and 6-membered heterocyclic aromatic ring systems, relations between certain geometrical parmeters and the covalent or the van der Waals radii of the heteroatoms are reported. The derived covalent and the van der Waals radii agree well with their literature values.en
